American alligators thrive in freshwater lakes and wetlands and are an integral part of many ecosystems in the United States. Lochloosa Lake in Alachua County has a thriving population of nearly 350 alligators. The lake’s vegetation supports many species that are vital for the alligator’s survival, including keystone fish species that the gators feed on. They play their part in the bigger ecosystem at the lake.
