These 10 Animals Played Heroic (and Overlooked) Roles in the Civil War

When you think of the Civil War, you tend to imagine soldiers, generals, and actual combat. However, there were animals that played important and sometimes forgotten roles. From carrying ammunition to boosting moral, these creatures were invaluable assets in the war effort. It’s about time they were acknowledged for it. Here they are.

1. Horses: The Backbone of War

Horses were very useful in both the Union and Confederate armies. They took cavalry into battle, dragged cannons across mountains, and served as important messengers. Without them, fast communication and movement would have been impossible. They were the unsung heroes of the battlefield.

2. Mules: The Tireless Transporters

Mules were the most valuable assets in the Civil War. Thanks to their strength and stability, there were able to move ammunition, food and medical supplies across difficult terrains. They enabled both sides of the conflict due to their ability to walk between territories, through slippery grounds.

3. War Dogs: Messengers and Morale Boosters

Military dogs were common. They were used as messengers, guard dogs, and even pets. They were loyal and had a good sense of smell to help find enemy troops, pass messages to the front lines and stand as friends to soldiers who were far from home.

Carrier pigeons were used to pass important information to the target area through the enemy’s territory. They were very efficient and came in handy when normal communication was impossible. Even human lives were saved thanks to these birds that carried emergency messages with speed.

The US army once used camels in the Southwest during the war. Camels were viable because they could transport loads and withstand extreme temperatures, which made them a good option. Although the experiment didn’t last long, camels showed their strength in harsh conditions.

Thousands of soldiers had to be fed, and this demanded a lot of resources. Cattle gave them beef in large quantities and therefore became an important part of war operations. Herds were brought to the front lines and had to be protected, which became a critical strategic task for both sides.

With limited and sometimes no supply of food, soldiers tamed chickens so their eggs and meat could act as a food option. These small but effective birds helped in feeding the troops and thus proved that even the simplest animals were useful in the war.

When you consider that during the war there was a lot of noise and chaos, some soldiers tamed canaries and other songbirds. They could sing and make soldiers cheerful and feel at home. These birds gave hope and encouragement to the troops in a place where hope was hard to find.

Cats were useful in the camp and on military ships as they controlled the spread of rats therefore preserving the health of soldiers. In this way, cats served a purpose more essential than being the aloof companions we know them as today.

10. Pigs: A Portable Food Source

Pigs were also kept within the camps to provide the troops with pork. Compared to cattle, they could be fenced in easily and did not require much care. They were versatile and nutritious and thus formed a convenient part of war planning.

Beside their practical function, the animals gave hope to the soldiers who were facing terrible conditions. Whether it was a sturdy war horse, a loyal dog or a singing canary, these animals gave comfort and spirit to those who were fighting on the front lines.
