Dogs are inquisitive, and sometimes, their curious nature can get them in trouble. There are quite a few animals that you need to be wary of that could pose a serious threat to your dog.
1. Rattlesnakes
Rattlesnakes are known to be quite sneaky, but if you make one wrong move, they can be pretty deadly for your furry friend. These snakes are most common in dry, rocky areas, but their rattle alone usually isn’t enough to warn your pup. When you are planning on going for a hike with your pup, make sure to keep them on a leash in areas where these snakes are most common.
2. Coyotes
Your dog may see coyotes as a scruffy friend, but they shouldn’t be messed with. Coyotes have been known to snatch small pets from urban areas, and your dog might not know better. They are skilled hunters, and it’s best not to let your dog wander off into the woods on its own.
3. Toads
Dogs love chasing around any critter they can find, but some toads can be deadly to dogs if they are licked or bitten. The Cane Toad and Colorado River Toad are some of the most dangerous toads, and it would be best to keep them away from all toads in general. Keep an eye on your pup when they’re off-leash or taking a moment to rest.
4. Bears
Bears are quite large, and dogs won’t necessarily try to take on a bear or even get curious, but bears, on the other hand, could be quite the problem. Bears are very curious, and if they do decide to investigate, it might be a problem. If dogs try to chase or bark at a bear, it might provoke an attack. Make sure to keep your dog leashed to prevent any possible encounters.
5. Mountain Lions
These big cats are silent but deadly hunters who might have their eye on you long before you spot them. In California and Colorado, mountain lions have been known to attack unsupervised pets. It’s best to make sure your dog is close by at all times and not leave food out at night.
6. Hawks & Owls
Small dogs can be a big target for these aerial predators. These birds are known to swoop down and carry off small pets. If you are in open areas and have a small dog, make sure to keep an eye on it, especially if it is known to the area.
7. Wolves
While wolves aren’t as common as coyotes, they are extremely dangerous. A single wolf can take down a large-breed dog, and a pack can be even more dangerous. If you are in an area known to have wolves, keep your dog on a leash and don’t let it wander off on its own.
8. Scorpions
Dogs love sniffing around and chasing any movement, but that can be pretty dangerous, as some critters can be deadly. Scorpions may be small but can be fatal if your pup pokes his nose into the wrong place. If your dog does happen to get stung, make sure to check for symptoms and get them immediate medical attention if they show any.
9. Fire Ants
These little critters can be quite the nuisance when you happen to stumble upon a nest. Fire ants don’t just bite; they tend to swarm and sting repeatedly. If your dog happens to step or sniff its way into a nest, make sure to check it for any symptoms, as they can lead to a serious allergic reaction.
10. Jellyfish
If you’re taking a stroll on the beach with your dog, watch them closely. Dogs love sniffing around and being curious, and if they happen to stumble upon a beached jellyfish, some species can be pretty deadly. If your dog gets stung by a jellyfish, rinse with seawater and seek veterinary help.
11. Alligators
If your pup loves playing around in the water when hiking, be weary of areas that might be infested with alligators. It’s best to keep your dog on their leash when the temptation is too high, and the waters are known for gators, so don’t allow them to go into murky water.
