While enjoying a morning coffee on his porch in Little River, South Carolina, photographer Dan Krieger noticed what appeared to be a burnt log across the water. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was an alligator with a striking orange tint basking in the February sun.

Alligators undergo a period of dormancy during colder months known as brumation, quite similar to hibernation in mammals. This state typically lasts from November to February, during which alligators become less active and often burrow into mud or settle at the bottoms of water bodies to conserve energy.

The color in these gators is due to environmental factors. During brumation, alligators may come into contact with substrates rich in iron oxides, like clay-rich mud or rusty water, leading to temporary staining of their skin. “Alligators, they do hibernate during the winter, and they nestle into the mud or culverts, and where we are, all these different ponds are connected so that it might have been in there, and what they do during the winter time is they come in contact with this rust-colored mud or water,” Krieger said to Fox Weather.

Iron oxide can be found in soil or water and gives off a reddish or orange tint to anything it touches. When alligators inhabit areas with high concentrations of iron oxide, their skin can absorb these pigments, resulting in their orange-colored skin.
