Jim Passmore of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, has always loved nature and animals. His daily walks with his two dogs were a routine he cherished, offering tranquility and a connection to the wild. But one crisp March morning, a simple stroll turned into an unforgettable act of bravery. What Jim initially thought was a distressed beaver trapped in the mud turned out to be something entirely unexpected—an ordeal that showcased his compassion and quick thinking.

A beaver emerged from the woods, startling Jim. Strangely, it led him to the edge of the creek where the struggling animal lay. Intrigued, Jim felt compelled to follow its lead.

An Uncertain Rescue

The mound in the mud was too large to be a beaver. Jim decided to act despite not knowing what he was rescuing. He knew the animal needed help fast.

Jim called nearby walkers to assist him. The animal, frightened and weak, was reluctant to move. One helper was bitten, raising concerns about rabies and making the rescue even more precarious.

A Clever Plan

Realizing they needed to calm the animal, Jim covered its head with a jersey. This seemed to soothe it enough for the group to work on freeing it from the thick mud.

After hours of digging and pulling, the team managed to free the animal. Jim wiped away the mud from its face and stepped back in shock—it wasn’t a beaver but a large sheepdog.

A Shocking Discovery

The dog, later named Teddy, was weak but alive. Jim couldn’t fathom how it ended up in such a dire situation. The cage and weighted chain suggested deliberate cruelty.

Teddy couldn’t walk, so Jim and his helpers used a wheelbarrow to transport him to their vehicle. They quickly contacted the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals (OAA) for further assistance.

Jim’s heroic act gave Teddy a second chance. With love and care, the dog started to heal, embodying hope and survival. It eventually resulted in Teddy being adopted! On Teddy’s new official Facebook account, this amazing update was posted:

“Teddy was adopted by one of the only people he liked at Alta Vista Animal Hospital while staying there. He was a bit on the cranky side when he first arrived at the clinic, but now lives in his new home with his momma Jessie and other dogs.” Teddy is now in a loving home surrounded by his new family, and he looks so happy in all of their update photos.
