Dogs are man’s best friend, but not all people have the time and money for high maintenance animals. Thankfully, with over 300 dog breeds, there’s bound to be one to fit into any kind of lifestyle that people live.
When it comes to low maintenance, we’ve looked at all angles, including things like patience, grooming, energy, and exercise. Here are some of the lowest maintenance dogs for people with busy schedules.
1. Basset Hounds
Basset hounds are a low-energy breed that also doesn’t need much exercise. They still need walks, but they like taking it slow and only need a waltz around the block to be satisfied.
2. Shiba Inu
The Shiba Inu is one of the most adorable breeds and is very popular in Japan. Shiba Inus tends to adapt well to its owners. They are completely content lounging with their owners or heading out for a walk. They also are happy to be left alone if you have to step out.
3. French Bulldogs
Frenchies are way more comfortable lying in their dog bed over-exercise. The short-legged breed loves to be in the company of its owner and is the second most popular breed for a reason.
4. Pug
The pug is a small breed with a short and easy to groom coat. They also have a calm demeanor which means they won’t get up to too much mischief. They are also great with children and happy to be trained.
5. Beagle
The beagle requires a medium amount of walking but makes up for it with its coat. They only require brushing once a week and have good temperaments. They can be a little stubborn, but their happy-go-lucky demeanor means they show little to no aggression.
6. Vizsla
The Vizsla is a breed that’s always eager to please their owners. They are a bit energetic but a walk twice a week should keep them happy. They make up for all of their energy with their grooming. They aren’t a smelly breed, meaning they lack a “dog smell” even if they haven’t been groomed in a while.
7. Chihuahuas
Chihuahuas are happy to go wherever their owners go, and unlike most other breeds, you can actually take them on outings with the proper pet carrier. They can be taken on walks but don’t like long hikes.
8. Border Terrier
The border terrier is a stubborn breed but loves families and is great with children. They like short walks but are easily distracted by their prey drive – this means that a leash is recommended for this breed when walking them in public. At the end of the day, they still love to lounge around the floor or the couch.
9. Greyhound
Greyhound might be the last breed on your mind when thinking about low-maintenance, but they are actually enjoy resting all day, despite being such a quick breed. On walks, they have a prey drive just like the border terrier, so make sure to keep them on a leash when walking them in suburban placed.
10. Dachshund
Despite needing basic training to show them who the boss is, Dachshunds are dogs that, with a little effort, can be amazing companions. There are miniature dachshunds and normal dachshunds, which are medium breeds. Both make great snuggle buddies for movie night. All they want to do is cuddle up to their owners on the couch.
11. Mastiff
Due to the sheer size of the breed, many people might assume that mastiffs are nightmares to maintain, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The mastiff loves the couch nearly as much as we do! They don’t require a lot of exercise and normally tire quite easily due to their size.
12. Maltese
The Maltese loves sitting on laps and lounging around all day and love being family dogs. They don’t require a lot of exercise, but the downfall for busy owners is their coats. If an owner is willing to groom them frequently, they make amazing pets.
13. Chinese Crested
The Chinese crested has a lot of love and happiness to give. They are happy-go-lucky dogs that adapt to the lifestyle of their owners quickly and don’t need a lot of exercise. They are also hypoallergenic, which makes them perfect for people with allergies.
