Everyone loves a good horror movie. But there’s one trope that some of us aren’t big fans of. That’s when the dog in the horror movie has a terrible fate.
Thankfully, some horror movies would rather keep the dog healthy while everyone else around them is fighting for their lives. Here are some great examples.
1. The Conjuring 2
Unlike its predecessor, The Conjuring 2 is a little kinder to the dog in the movie. Baron the rottweiler has a minor role, which benefits him.
Maybe when writing the script, the writers decided that poor old Baron wasn’t worth being messed with.
2. Insidious 3
The third installment of Insidious follows Elise Rainer’s perspective. Her dog, Warren, keeps her company throughout the movie.
We get to the end of the movie, and Warren is still there, protecting his owner. But that’s when he sees something out to get Elise.
3. Friday The Thirteenth: Part VIII
There have been a lot of Friday The Thirteenth movies, but there’s always on quality that Jason has that always keeps us coming back, he’s only concerned with humans.
Initially wanting his revenge, Jason mostly stalks camp counselors and raunchy adults. But in Part VIII, a border collie named Toby gets spared by Voorhees.
4. American Werewolf In London
In American Werewolf In London, the protagonist, David, is attacked by a werewolf but survives. Unfortunately for him, that means that he’s now infected.
Thankfully, when he attacks some people later in the movie, they have a dog with them that escapes. He doesn’t chase after the pooch, so he’s good in our books.
5. The Amityville Horror
The original “The Amityville Horror” has a dog playing a fairly big role throughout the movie. Harry, the family pet, can sense the evil in the house before anyone else.
He even saves one of the characters at some point, and the favor is returned. Just don’t watch the remake if you want Harry to survive – he has a far worse fate.
6. Mama
Mama follows two children that are lost in the wilderness for years until they’re found by a local hunter and are taken in by their uncle.
Something ends up following them from the woods. Thankfully, it seems that the entity is not interested in Handsome, the uncle’s dachshund.
7. Poltergeist
Poltergeist is a classic and cult horror film that doesn’t follow the trend of offing the dog. E. Buzz is the family’s golden retriever and a very good boy.
Thankfully, despite everything that goes on in the movie, the dog is left alone and unharmed. Unfortunately, A canary does die.
8. Don’t Breathe
In Don’t Breathe, three burglars find what they think is an easy mark. Unfortunately for them, they found out the man living in the house they broke into has a lot of surprises for them.
One of the surprises is an aggressive rottweiler. Thankfully, the characters don’t end up hurting the rottweiler.
9. The Hills Have Eyes (Partially)
We’re warning you that in The Hills Have Eyes, there is the tragic death of a German Shepherd named Beauty, but her male counterpart – Beast, is the one that survives.
He not only gets to live but also avenges Beauty by taking out a lot of mutants during the course of the film. Watching Beast get his revenge is satisfying all on its own.
