Despite being our best friends, our dogs’ adventurous nature can sometimes get the better of them. Whether they’re chasing after rodents or want to follow us out when we have to leave the house, they can accidentally run away.
Some More Well-Behaved Than Others
You might be looking to get a new pup and have a low boundary wall or are just curious about which breeds are good at running away. Some breeds are a little more well-behaved than others and can be trained to know the boundaries of their owner’s property.
1. Australian Shepherd
Australian shepherds are amazing dogs that need plenty of room to stretch their legs. If they aren’t exercised regularly, they might find an opening to get out of their owner’s property to give themselves the run they need. If you don’t want your shepherd to run away, try to tire them out on walks and runs.
2. Labrador Retriever
Labrador retrievers are some of the friendliest dog breeds on the planet, but that can also be their downfall. They have been known to approach strangers and are curious about anything happening nearby. This means they can wander off easily. Keep them tired and with plenty of stimulation.
3. German Shepherd
While German shepherds are some of the most trainable breeds, it might not be their intellect that’s the problem. German shepherds have amazing noses, but like labradors, they are curious. A German shepherd could investigate nearby scents like animals they mistake for prey. They may end up getting lost if they stray too far from home.
4. Cocker Spaniel
Although the cocker Spaniel may have a gorgeous coat and wonderful temperament, it often gets lost. This is not always in its owners’ control, as it is a commonly dognapped breed. Make sure to lock them up tight when you go out and keep an eye on them when on walks.
5. Border Collie
Like their Australian shepherd cousins, border collies are herding dogs and love wide open spaces. This means they love to run free and need to be tired out. If they aren’t placated, they are good diggers and can get underneath a fence if they are motivated enough.
6. Great Dane
Great Danes are great athletes and natural-born hunters. This means they may chase after rodents and escape their property or just want to be alone. Great Danes are unique in that they like alone time, look for hiding places to make their “den,” and can even hoard things like treats and toys.
7. Jack Russel Terrier
The Jack Russel terrier needs plenty of energy and can use its small size to its advantage when escaping if it gets bored. It is easily trained but needs plenty of attention. They can fit through smaller gaps than bigger breeds. Try keeping them busy, and they shouldn’t try getting out.
8. Pit Bull
Pit bull mixes have a lot of energy that they need to use and they also get bored quite easily. If they are left alone all day, they may try to escape. Try to keep a pit bull mix entertained enough throughout the day.
