Chilling Threat Discovered in Alaska’s Permafrost – Frozen for 25,000 Years

Alaska, known for its vast wilderness and ice landscapes, is facing a significant threat due to the thawing of its permafrost. Permafrost, which covers roughly 85% of Alaska, is ground that stays frozen for at least two years, often for thousands and even millions of years. This frozen ground plays a crucial role in supporting ecosystems and infrastructure all across the Arctic. However, with rising global temperatures, permafrost is melting at an alarming rate, posing both biological and environmental risks. Scientists at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) near Fairbanks have made unsettling discoveries that highlight the dangers posed by thawing permafrost.

Located just outside of Fairbanks, Alaska, the CRREL lab is a unique research facility dedicated to studying the Alaskan terrain. It is accessed through a red shack embedded in a hillside that leads to a tunnel 40 feet beneath the surface. Operating since the 1960s, this facility specializes in research on cold regions, including permafrost studies. Here, scientists have been working around the clock to understand the implications of thawing permafrost, and they’ve found some frightening stuff.

What is Permafrost?

Permafrost is any ground that stays frozen for at least two years. It is not necessarily solid and can contain layers of moist soil. Permafrost is found not only in Alaska but also in other parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including Canada, Russia , and Greenland. It is a fundamental part of the Earth’s cryosphere, providing habitats for unique ecosystems and sustaining infrastructure in the Arctic.

Permafrost’s Role in Ecosystems

Permafrost acts as “the glue that holds northern ecosystems together,” according to Merritt Turetsky, the director of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado Boulder. It helps maintain the Earth’s climate by trapping carbon dioxide, and it is home to a range of plants and animals adapted to these frigid conditions. As permafrost melts, however, those ecosystems are threatened with collapse.

The Threat of Thawing Permafrost

Thawing permafrost poses significant threats to both environmental and human health. As permafrost thaws, it emits the potent greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane, both of which drive global warming. This process creates a dangerous feedback loop where warming accelerates permafrost thaw, which results in further greenhouse gas emissions.

Biological Risks

Researchers have found that permafrost contains ancient bacteria and viruses that have been frozen for thousands of years. These include harmful and dangerous pathogens like Bacillus anthracis, the organism that causes anthrax, and viruses like smallpox. The revival of these pathogens could potentially lead to disease outbreaks, although some experts argue that risk is low due to their fragility in today’s modern environments.

Experimental Findings

In experiments conducted at CRREL, scientists have succeeded in reviving bacteria  trapped in samples of permafrost. These 25,000-year-old frozen bacteria started to multiply quickly after thawing, which shows that ancient microbes can become active again as permafrost melts.

Historical Disease Outbreaks

There have been cases of disease outbreaks associated with thawing permafrost. An anthrax outbreak caused by warming permafrost killed one boy and more than 2,000 reindeer in Russia. Such incidences underscore the actual dangers posed by permafrost thaw.

Environmental Impacts

Beyond biological risks, thawing permafrost poses serious environmental consequences. It can lead to the collapse of infrastructure such as roads, buildings, and bridges as the ground beneath them becomes unstable. This is already happening in Alaska, where many buildings are being damaged or destroyed.

Climate Change Feedback Loop

Reddit – avogadros number

Permafrost contains enormous amounts of carbon, estimated to be twice the current atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. As it melts, this carbon escapes into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. This creates a self-reinforcing loop where warming accelerates the thawing of permafrost, leading to more warming.

Economic and Social Impacts

Reddit – Wagamaga

Melting permafrost has serious economic and social impacts. The cost of repairing and replacing damaged infrastructure in Alaska will be high—estimates suggest that climate change could cost the state at least $5.5 billion by the end of the century. The biggest challenges are in more vulnerable rural communities.

Global Implications

The melting of permafrost is not just a local concern; it has global ramifications. The release of greenhouse gases from permafrost is a contributing factor to global warming, which is impacting ecosystems and communities around the globe. The Arctic’s rapid warming is also affecting global weather and climate.

Future Research and Solutions

Scientists are working to better understand the dynamics of permafrost thaw and its impacts. However, finding solutions is a difficult and lengthy process. It encompasses a lot of work, including drilling into permafrost, analyzing samples, and making future projections. With those challenges in mind, urgent action is required to halt the damage of thawing permafrost and safeguard both local and global ecosystems.
