Giant viruses have been found in oceans, soil, and even humans, but their presence on surface ice is a first. Perini’s team discovered these viruses in Greenland’s dark ice, red snow, and cryoconite, revealing an intricate ecosystem involving bacteria, fungi, protists, and algae.

Despite their size, giant viruses are not visible to the naked eye or standard light microscopes. The team identified them through DNA and RNA analysis, confirming their activity and presence in the ice environment.
