In 2001, the Qinghua Group began dumping chemical waste near Wang’s village in Qiqihar, northeast China. This reckless pollution made Wang’s land unfit for agriculture and filled nearby ponds with toxic liquid waste. The chemicals severely affected 71 acres of farmland and created a significant environmental crisis, leaving Wang and his neighbors unable to sustain their livelihoods.

Wang, with only three years of formal education, decided to take legal action. He began his self-education by copying legal information by hand in a bookshop, paying for his materials with sacks of corn. He spent years gathering evidence and learning relevant laws, often facing dismissive local courts and inspection agencies that ignored his pleas.

In 2007, Wang started receiving free legal guidance, which helped him strengthen his case. Despite persistent delays and counter-accusations, he managed to bring the case to court after eight years. The Angangxi District Court ruled in favor of Wang and his neighbors, awarding them ¥820,000 (£96,000) in damages. This ruling marked a significant milestone in Wang’s fight for justice.

However, his story stands as a testament to the power of resilience and determination. Wang’s unwavering commitment to holding polluters accountable inspires environmental activists worldwide and underscores the importance of grassroots efforts in combating corporate negligence.
