With the end of the year approaching and winter setting in, this year has been a productive one for trail cams. All sorts of animals around the U.S. and other countries have been captured on camera this year. Here are some of the standouts we’ve found on the internet.
1. Mountain Lion
In Northshore, Lake Whatcom, this majestic specimen was caught by a trail cam on private property in the early morning hours. Although the photo is grainy, his glowing eyes are all we need to make out to know we wouldn’t want to mess with him.
2. Turkey
This trail camera in Ontario, Canada, shows a wild turkey. Their numbers have increased since they were traded with other animals in the U.S. in 1984. We can also see a nest, meaning they are surviving and thriving.
3. Pumas
In this jungle trail camera, two pumas can be seen going up a path in the jungles of Costa Rica and then moving out of the frame. With such a large biodiversity, we’re not surprised to see them. Pumas are excellent jumpers and use their powerful back legs to get onto the back of their prey.
4. Ocelot
On this trail, in Costa Rica’s jungles, an ocelot can be seen drinking water from a bucket that’s been left out. Thankfully, he takes the bait and gives us a nice view of his beautiful spots. Ocelots are pickier than other wild cats when it comes to eating and will pluck feathers from birds and even fur off mammals before eating them.
5. Wolverine
In the Yukon wilderness in Canada, a wolverine can be seen with its head bent down low, most likely searching for food. These mammals may look unassuming, but they can weigh up to 40 pounds, and their claws are extremely sharp.
6. Yukon Wolf
In this photo, we can see an Interior Alaskan wolf or Yukon wolf. They are a subspecies of grey wolf and are found in large numbers in the Yukon wilderness. They mainly target moose and take the large animals down in packs.
7. Grizzly Bear
The grizzly bears that call the Yukon wilderness home have a slow reproductive rate, and females can weigh an average of 300 pounds. A fair number of Yukon grizzly bears can be found in the Ni’iinlii Njik Territorial Park, which only lets in four visitors per day and only two months a year.
8. Raccoons
This trail camera in Idaho spotted some fantastic animals in September 2024. In this photo, two raccoons are standing in a shallow pond. Raccoons are excellent swimmers and hunt all sorts of aquatic animals, including fish and frogs.
9. Elk
Another trail camera in Idaho captured a male elk digging a hole. Males will dig holes in mating season and urinate in them. Once they’ve urinated in the hole, they’ll rub their body inside of it. The hope is that the scent attracts a mate.
