In the frontiers of America, people were hardy, but that didn’t mean they didn’t need a little help from our canine companions. Even in the Wild West, dogs were crucial for certain tasks and in their own way, helped shape America.
From indigenous breeds to more exotic ones brought over from Europe, here are some of the dog breeds that helped frontier Americans in their day-to-day lives. Despite how much things have changed, these breeds kept them company on lonely nights like they do now.
1. Chinook
The Chinook was originally bred in New Hampshire and was perfect for the needs of frontiersmen. The reliable animal had combinations of other breeds like the Greenland husky and Mastiff and were known for their stamina and strength. They made perfect sled dogs during the goldrush.
2. Greyhounds
Despite most notably being known for racing, greyhounds had a purpose for all of that speed when the breed emerged more than 4000 years ago. They made for perfect hunting dogs, even being able to slow down big game so hunters could catch them.
3. Australian Shepherd
The Australian shepherd is now known for its amazing discipline and obedience, but those traits were crucial in the American West. As America expanded, ranches started popping up everywhere and the Australian Shepherd became perfect for herding cattle.
4. Blue Lacy
Blue Lacy was only recognized as its own breed somewhat recently and is the official dog of Texas. The breed was created to try to be a jack of all trades. They were good trackers as well as herders when the situation demanded it.
5. Catahoula Leopard Dog
The Catahoula Leopard Dog was a pioneer breed created for a specific purpose in the unique landscape of Louisiana. They could navigate the treacherous swamps of the area and could heard farm animals with ease. The breed is also quite prone to heterochromia – having two different eye colors.
6. Scottish Deerhound
As the name would suggest, the Scottish Deerhound was bred for a specific purpose – hunting deer. To do so, they have plenty of speed and strenght, but they’re surpisingly gentle when it comes to people. Once they were recognized for their attributes, they were brought over from Scotland to help in frontier America.
7. Bloodhounds
This list wouldn’t be complete without bloodhounds. Bloodhounds were originally bred in Europe but brought over to help Wild West lawmen. They’re exceptional trackers, which means they can find almost anyone if they pick up their scent.
8. Saint Bernhard
The Saint Bernhard was brought over from Europe as Europeans immigrated, looking for new lives. They can remember routes well enough to not get their owners lost and are exceptionally good at search and rescue.
9. Border Collies
Even today, border collies are one of the most popular breeds, and for good reason. Their loyalty, intelligence, and integrity was exceptionally useful in the Wild West where they helped herd cattle and keep their owners safe and in good company.
