The United States is full of dog lovers, and with over 300 breeds internationally recognized, that leaves a lot of debate as to which are the most popular. Most states are similar, as the top three domesticated dogs are generally uncontested everywhere.
The American Kennel Club has polled which breeds are the most popular. And while there are Labradors, German Shepherds, and golden retrievers across all states, if we look at the states, then things look slightly different. From the obvious dogs to some surprise contenders, here are the top dogs in some of the most popular U.S. states.
1. New Mexico
While New Mexico’s official dog may be the chihuahua, it’s surprisingly not in their top three for most popular canine companions. Their most popular dogs are the Labrador, Bulldog, and golden retriever.
2. New York
With the way that New York is built up, one would imagine that the most popular breeds would be miniatures and toys to fit into all those apartments. However, New Yorkers love their medium and large breeds too. Labradors and German shepherds are as popular as ever, but number one is the French bulldog.
3. Pennsylvania
The official dog of Pennsylvania is the Great Dane and has been for nearly sixty years. It’s a massive dog that can be taller than most people when standing on its hind legs.
Still, the most popular breeds follow in the footsteps of other states, being the Labradors, German shepherds, and… you guessed it – golden retrievers.
4. South Dakota
Although the border collie is hugely popular in South Dakota and other states with a lot of ranches, the breed still couldn’t break the top three, which are: Labrador, golden retriever, and German Shepherd.
5. North Dakota
The other Dakota doesn’t have an official dog yet, but it’s just like its cousin, South. North Dakota’s top three are also the Labrador, golden retriever, and German shepherd.
6. Texas
The state of Texas has its own special breed as its official dog – Blue Lacy. The breed was only officially recognized somewhat recently. The three most popular breeds, on the other hand, are Labradors, German shepherds, and bulldogs. At least there’s some variety here.
7. Vermont
Despite this being a list of the most popular canines, Vermont is actually the state that’s rated the biggest cat lover. When it comes to canines, their favorites are Labradors, beagles, and golden retrievers.
8. California
With San Francisco and its people’s love for the French bulldog, it’s no surprise that it tops the list, followed closely by the German shepherd. Los Angeles and San Diego do prefer the normal bulldog.
9. Colorado
Throwing a curve ball is Colorado. Their national dog breed is the rescue dog, which isn’t actually recognized by the American Kennel Club. Generally, rescue dogs are mixed breeds, which means they don’t fit on this list. In terms of purebreds, the most popular breeds in the state are Labradors, German shepherds, and golden retrievers.
