Cole Taschman, a Florida man, has become a local legend after surviving not one, but two shark attacks at the exact same beach location. The 28-year-old, who was recently attacked while swimming at Bathtub Beach in Martin County, previously survived a shark bite at the same spot when he was just 16 years old. The odds-defying incident has sparked widespread media attention and reignited discussions about shark safety at Florida’s beaches.
Taschman’s First Encounter at Age 16
Taschman’s first encounter occurred in 2012, when he was only 16 years old. He was swimming off Bathtub Beach with friends when he felt a sharp pain in his leg. As he described it, “It was like a vise closing on my calf.” He managed to escape by hitting the shark on the nose, a technique recommended by experts. The attack left him with deep lacerations that required stitches but fortunately caused no lasting damage.
The Unlikely Second Attack 12 Years Later
This past Saturday, while revisiting Bathtub Beach, Taschman found himself in a frighteningly familiar situation. He had only been in the water for a few minutes when a Bull or Tiger shark struck again, this time biting his left arm. “It was surreal; I couldn’t believe it was happening again,” Taschman told reporters. He managed to fend off the shark and escape to shore, where lifeguards quickly provided first aid before transporting him to a nearby hospital. He was treated for bite wounds and released later that day.
Local Officials Emphasize Shark Safety Measures
In response to the recent attack, local officials have issued reminders about shark safety at popular swimming spots like Bathtub Beach. While shark attacks are rare, swimmers are encouraged to avoid areas where sharks might be feeding and to remain vigilant in the water. “While Mr. Taschman’s experience is highly unusual, we want to remind beachgoers that sharks are a natural part of our ecosystem,” said a spokesperson for Martin County’s Parks and Recreation Department.
A Remarkable Survival Story with a Bit of Humor
Though he now has two scars as reminders of his close calls, Taschman is maintaining a sense of humor about his unique experience. “Maybe Bathtub Beach just isn’t my place,” he joked. Taschman’s resilience has inspired many Floridians, who have taken to social media to praise his courage and determination. Despite the double encounter, Taschman says he plans to keep swimming but may pick a different beach next time.
