West Virginia is a state full of natural beauty, but it’s also a place where some of the most dangerous creatures in the United States call home. From venomous snakes to lethal predators, wildlife roaming these mountains and woods can be absolutely deadly. Whether you’re a hiker, a camper, or simply an animal enthusiast, it’s essential to know about these creatures and how to keep yourself safe. Let’s get a better look at 7 of the most poisonous animals in West Virginia and what you should know to keep safe.

1. Eastern Timber Rattlesnake

The Eastern Timber Rattlesnake is one of West Virginia’s most venomous animals. Its bite is very painful and causes bad swelling. The snake is not normally aggressive but will bite when threatened or surprised. It rattles its tail as a warning sign, but hikers should always pay attention and watch where they walk anyway.

Black Bears, West Virginia’s largest predators, can cause severe harm. Though not typically aggressive, they may become dangerous when surprised, particularly when with their young or in close proximity to food. Powerful, large, and with razor-sharp claws, they are a tough foe in a battle.

3. Copperhead Snake

The Copperhead is yet another poisonous snake that is a considerable danger in West Virginia. Recognized by their unique coloring and effective camouflage, they are not usually seen until it’s too late. The bite of a Copperhead can lead to swelling, pain, and even death in extreme circumstances. They are more aggressive than rattlesnakes and will bite when cornered.

4. Striped Skunk

Though not normally harmful, the striped skunk is a danger as it is a potential rabies carrier. A bite or scratch from an infected skunk would spread the disease, and if not treated, rabies is lethal. It is best to have no contact with skunks, particularly if they are acting strangely.

5. Bobcat

The Bobcat is an excellent predator that roams the forests and countryside of West Virginia. Although it generally tries to shy away from humans, a bobcat will be vicious when harassed or cornered. Sharp teeth and claws have the potential to inflict serious injury. They are also dangerous to small pets and livestock.

6. Mountain Lion

Mountain Lions do, albeit rarely, prowl the wild regions of West Virginia. These big cats are strong enough to kill prey as large as deer. They are strong and nimble enough to inflict injury on human beings too. Attacks on people are extremely uncommon, but mountain lions should nonetheless be approached with caution.

7. Poisonous Spiders – Black Widow and Brown Recluse

Along with snakes, West Virginia also has poisonous spiders, including the Black Widow and Brown Recluse. A bite from either spider can result in serious reactions, ranging from pain and swelling to muscle cramps and death. Be careful when moving debris or reaching into places where these spiders could be hiding.

Avoiding a Bear Encounter

To prevent an encounter with a bear, always make some noise when walking or hiking in the woods. This signals bears that you are present, and they will generally get out of your way. If you do happen to come face to face with a bear however, never run. Stand your ground, make yourself appear bigger, and slowly back up.

If you are bitten by a poisonous snake, it’s extremely important to seek medical attention right away. Never try to suck out the poison or apply a tourniquet. Immobilize the affected limb, and if you can, identify the snake for doctors. The sooner you receive medical attention, the greater your chances of survival.
