10 Animals That May Disappear Forever In 2025 – The Last Of Their Kind

phys.org

Some of the rarest creatures on Earth are barely hanging on by a thread—and 2025 might be their last year alive. Poaching, deforestation, and climate change are pushing them over the edge faster than scientists can save them. Some species are down to SINGLE DIGITS. So, who’s at the highest risk of disappearing forever? Let’s get into it.

1. The Vaquita

Reddit – smoresdogs

Left in the wild: Less than 10
These tiny porpoises live in Mexico’s Gulf of California, but they’re as good as gone at this point. Why? Illegal fishing. Fishermen use huge nets to catch another fish called totoaba, and vaquitas get trapped and drowned in the process. With fewer than ten left, they’re the rarest marine mammal on Earth—and 2025 could be the year they vanish forever.

2. Javan Rhino

Left in the wild: 76
You’d think the rarest rhino species on Earth would get a little more attention, but no—most people have never even heard of them. Javan rhinos used to roam across Asia, but now they’re crammed into one tiny national park in Indonesia. If one bad disease outbreak hits the population, it’s game over. Forever.

3. The Kakapo

Left in the wild: 250
Meet the world’s strangest parrot. It’s flightless, nocturnal, smells like flowers, and when threatened, it just… freezes (not the best defense strategy). Native to New Zealand, these chunky birds were almost wiped out by rats and cats. Scientists are literally hand-raising them to keep them alive, but it’s still unclear if that will be enough.

4. The Amur Leopard

Left in the wild: Around 120
These stunning snow leopards live in Russia and China, and their biggest threat? Humans, of course. Poaching, habitat destruction, and climate change have driven them to the brink of extinction. With so few left, every single birth is a huge deal, but scientists aren’t sure if their numbers will ever recover.

5. The Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle

Reddit – Gobba42

Left in the wild: 3 (but only one female)
This is the saddest dating story ever. Scientists have been trying to get the last female to mate for years, but so far? Nothing. If they don’t find a solution fast, this species will be completely gone. No pressure though, right?

6. The Saola

Reddit – TheChickenWizard15

Left in the wild: ?? (Possibly fewer than 50)
This mystical-looking animal is so rare that scientists literally can’t find them. Native to Vietnam and Laos, the saola was only discovered in 1992, and it’s already on the verge of disappearing. If no one spots one in 2025, we might have to accept they’re already extinct.

7. The Axolotl

Left in the wild: Almost extinct
Axolotls are famous for their permanent “smile”, but in the wild? They’re practically gone. Their native habitat in Mexico is being destroyed by pollution, and while they thrive in captivity, their wild cousins are in crisis. 2025 could be the last year they exist outside of a lab.

8. The Gooty Sapphire Tarantula

Reddit – Dry_Relationship844

Left in the wild: Unknown, but declining FAST
These stunning blue tarantulas are found in a tiny forest patch in India, and guess what? People keep stealing them for the pet trade. They’re so rare that online sellers charge hundreds of dollars for one. If deforestation doesn’t kill them, human greed will.

9. The Pangolin

Left in the wild: Unknown, but declining fast
Pangolins look like tiny armored dragons, but that hasn’t stopped them from being hunted to near extinction. Over 1 million pangolins have been poached for their scales and meat, making them the most illegally trafficked mammal in the world. It’s horrifying.

10. The Red Wolf

Reddit – unnaturalorder

Left in the wild: Less than 20
Red wolves used to roam the southeastern U.S., but now they’re almost completely wiped out. Habitat loss and conflicts with farmers have made recovery nearly impossible. Unless conservation programs step up big time, they won’t make it to 2026.

Can We Actually Save These Animals?

Reddit – Squigglbird

Some of these species are on life support, but others still have a fighting chance. Conservation efforts brought the California condor and black-footed ferret back—so it’s possible. But 2025 is a critical year. If nothing is done, these animals could be gone forever.

What Can We Do?

It’s easy to feel helpless, but people have saved species before. Donating, raising awareness, and pushing for stronger wildlife protections all make a difference. The real question is, will we act before it’s too late?
