A giant Alaskan volcano, Mount Spurr, is waking up. There have been more earthquakes in the area, which suggests there could be an eruption. If this happens, it could have serious consequences. Let’s look at what’s happening there now and why it matters.
What’s Happening at Mount Spurr
The volcano has shown more seismic activity than usual for several months. Usually, it gets about 30 small quakes a week, but lately, that number shot up to 125. That’s over 2700 earthquakes in total, recorded since July 2023. It could mean magma is moving through underground cracks, putting pressure on the surface.
Why Scientists Are Worried
The last time Mount Spurr erupted was in 1992, sending ash 65,000 feet into the air. Scientists can’t say if and when it’ll erupt again. They believe there’s a 50-50 chance, so they’re closely observing the volcano.
How an Eruption Could Affect Wildlife
An eruption would have serious effects: it could change the whole environment. Bears, eagles, and moose need clean water and plants to survive. If ash covered everything, it could make it hard for them to find food or get enough oxygen.
Lahars Could Be a Huge Problem
When lava and hot gas hit the snow on the sides of the volcano it creates lahars: uncontrollable mudslides. These travel fast and kill everything in their course. Alaska is a hot spot for migratory birds. If Mount Spurr erupts, ash will coat these birds’ feathers, invade their lungs, and cover their food sources. Many birds come to Alaska to nest; if their food sources are covered in ash, they’ll be stuck.

Rivers that surround Mount Spurr are home to fish like salmon that local communities and animals depend on. Volcanic ash in the water could make it toxic or meddle with oxygen levels. This would affect every being that depends on them, from fish to bears to fishermen.
Anchorage Could Get Covered in Ash Again
Crater Peak, vent on the south side of Mount Spurr, erupted on June 27th, 1992. It covered most of Anchorage in ash. Flights were canceled and the city spent almost 2 million dollars cleaning up. If the Alaskan volcano erupts again, it could have even worse consequences, as more planes are passing through Anchorage’s airport now.
Can Scientists Predict an Eruption
Scientists are watching for signs of warning, such as additional earthquakes, rising gas levels, and temperature changes. But volcanoes are unpredictable. An eruption either occurs after clear signs of its arrival or erupts suddenly without warning. That’s why it’s so hard to prepare.
Has This Happened Before Without an Eruption
Spurr experienced many earthquakes between 2004 and 2006, but it didn’t erupt during that period. Occasionally, magma pushes up but doesn’t break through the surface. Scientists believe this may be what’s happening now, but there’s no way to be sure until there’s more evidence.
How Are Scientists Monitoring It
Scientists have set up 11 tracking stations to track every quake and gas release. They are eagerly studying the issue through air monitoring, checking for ground movement and temperature differences. Even small changes could indicate a pressure build-up, increasing the likelihood of an eruption.
What Happens Next
No one knows what’ll happen next. If signs continue increasing, then an eruption is more likely. If not, Spurr will fall silent once again. Scientists will still continue monitoring the volcano because things can change fast.
