Despite Warnings, India Just Doubled Its Tiger Population

Reddit – Kevundoe

People didn’t think this project would work because of India’s dense population and lack of space. But between 2010 and 2022, India’s tiger population went from 1,706 to 3,682. Stricter conservation laws and anti-poaching laws helped make this happen. Some experts question the numbers, but it’s still a big win for wildlife.

Why Even Care?

Tigers aren’t just big striped cats. They keep herbivore populations in check so forests don’t get destroyed. If they disappear, entire food chains start breaking down. Since India has most of the world’s tigers, what happens here affects conservation everywhere.

Where Do They Live?

Tigers in India roam across 138,200 square kilometers, which is roughly the size of New York. But only about 25% of that land is actually safe and full of prey. The rest is shared with people, which makes things complicated.

India’s Approach to Saving Tigers

India didn’t just put tigers in parks, hoping they would reproduce and thrive. They protected more land, made sure there was enough prey, became even stricter on poaching laws and tried to reduce human-wildlife conflict. Instead of just fencing them off, they worked on ways for people and tigers to live near each other.

Poaching Laws

Poaching used to be the biggest threat. Killing a tiger became riskier with stricter laws, better enforcement, and more funding for conservation. Less poaching meant tigers survived long enough to reproduce.

Not Everything Went Right

Even though numbers went up, some areas lost all their tigers. Places without reserves or sanctuaries suffered. Urbanization, deforestation and armed conflicts pushed them out.

Numbers Don’t Add Up?

Not everyone believes in the accuracy of the government’s tiger numbers. Some scientists think the tracking methods are inconsistent. The study, published in Science, tries to fix old data mistakes, but there’s still talk on how precise these estimates actually are.

The Human Problem (Or Solution?)

Forty-five percent of India’s tiger habitat is shared with 60 million people. And yet, tigers are still increasing. The study suggests it’s not about how many people are around, but how they interact with tigers.

Do Locals Support Tiger Conservation?

Some local communities actually benefit from the increase in tiger populations surrounding them. Ecotourism brings money and jobs. But in other cases, tigers kill their livestock and cause issues. So support for conservationists depends on the local villages’ stand.

What Other Countries Can Learn

Many people thought tigers couldn’t survive in human-heavy areas. But what took place in India has proven that if conservation laws are strict and well-planned, predators can coexist with people. This should be taken into consideration by countries whose tiger populations are decreasing.

It’s Not Just About Tigers

A lot of attention is poured into efforts to safeguard tigers in India – arguably too much attention. This means that other endangered species, like the great Indian bustard, is not being preserved. Conservation needs to also take entire ecosystems into consideration.

The Next Problem

Human-wildlife conflicts could increase, and if more people see tigers as a threat, conservation support might dip. India also has even more pressing issues, like determining how to manage their growing population.

So, What’s the Lesson?

India’s tiger conservation isn’t perfect. Some numbers are still debated, and some regions are completely void of tigers. But all in all, wildlife protection is possible, even in a country with over a billion people.
