Hachiko’s Loyalty

Hachiko, a Japanese Akita, would wait for his owner to return from work at the train station every day. But one day, his owner never came back. Hachiko kept waiting at the train station, hoping that one day, he would come back. A statue was made to cemmororate the dog’s loyalty at Shibuya Station.

Balto

In 1925, Balto led a sled team across Alaska to deliver life-saving medicine during a diphtheria outbreak. Facing extreme cold and dangerous terrain, Balto became a hero, saving many lives.

Laika’s Space Mission

Although Laika’s sad story brings up ethics and animal testing, she cemented her legacy as the first ever living being to reach closer than anyone else to the stars aboard Sputnik 2 in 1957. Laika’s contribution paved the way for human space exploration and reminded us of the sacrifices made in science.

Stubby, the War Hero

Sergeant Stubby, a stray Boston Terrier, served in World War I. His commitment to helping his comrades didn’t go unnoticed. He could sense gas attacks before they would happen, sniff out wounded comrades, and even managed to capture an enemy spy.

Nero The Hero

In 2013, a Newfoundland managed to wake up his family when a fire broke out and despite saving lives, Nero tragically didn’t survive. Even more than ten years later, the Nero is regarded as a hero dog.

Barry, the Saint Bernard Rescuer

A Saint Bernard named Barry was part of a long lineage of Saint Bernard’s in search and rescue. In his life, he managed to save over 40 people from avalanches in the Swiss Alps during the 1800s. Tragically, Barry was mistaken for a wolf in his last rescue mission and was fatally wounded with a bayonet.

Apollo

Just a few moments after the the World Trade Center collapsed, the German shepherd, Apollo, was on the scene ready to help in anyway he could. He sniffed through the rubble in search of anyone that had survived. Apollo’s dedication highlighted the critical role of dogs in disaster response. He was honored for his bravery and resilience.

Rocco

Rocco was an exceptional police dog who’s only goal was saving lives, He managed to help take down a suspect, but he succumbed to his injuries afterward. His sacrifice led to the creation of “Rocco’s Law,” strengthening penalties for harming police dogs.

Salty and Roselle

Guide dogs Salty and Roselle led their blind owners safely down 70 floors of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Despite the panic of the situation, they managed to get their owners out in time.

Bamse

Bamse, a St. Bernard, served on a Norwegian naval ship during World War II. He lifted morale and even saved a sailor by pulling him from the water. Bamse’s heroism earned him posthumous honors and a statue in his memory

Fido

Fido, a street dog from Borgo San Lorenzo, Italy, was rescued in 1941 by a brick kiln worker, Carlo Soriani, after being found injured. Carlo and Fido shared a close bond, with the dog accompanying Carlo to the bus stop each morning and waiting for him in the evening. Tragically, in 1943, Carlo was killed in a wartime bombing. Despite this, Fido continued waiting at the bus stop daily for 14 years, showing unwavering loyalty.
