Let’s put the lion, the king of the bushveld, to the test. While on the prowl, the mighty lion might face other challengers. Whether a challenge might occur for dominance, food resources or territory, it is something the lion cannot escape.
So, which other powerful animals measure up and could actually kill it? The following article will explore 9 such formidable opponents the lion might encounter in the wild. These 9 animals have different advantages, strategies and skill sets that come in handy against a lion. These attributes include size, survival strategies or pure power.
1. African Elephant

The biggest and mightiest opponent poses a great threat to the lion. With a mass weight of up to 6 000 kg (13 000 lbs), they are one of the biggest animals on the planet. Surely a lion would know not to engage with such a formidable opponent?
Although the lion does not usually actively seek out trouble with these elephants, conflict situations between the two species do arise. The fierce protective instinct combined with big white tusks, these elephants protect themselves against anything they see as a threat. That is why they would mostly prevail in a fight with a lion.
2. The Rhinoceros

Another massive challenger the lion might come across, with a weight up to 2300 kg (5 000lbs) and a thick body armored like skin to boot. Much larger than your average lion. Naturally, a lion would attempt the small or the weak of these species, but it is the fully grown adults they should look out for.
With a big horn, they weaponize, the rhinoceros would charge aggressively at a lion, using their horn as a spear to inflict deep wounds. This can be fatal to the lion. The rhinoceros is a more solitary animal compared to the elephant, but will fight just as fiercely if they feels threatened by something such as an attack from a lion.
3. Hippopotamus

When spotting a hippo in the wild, one might think that they are a docile species, but they are widely considered to be one of Africa’s most dangerous animals. They are very territorial, so they would see a lion as a threat when it roams too close and aggressively engages. Even more so in water.
A simple jaw would prove that they have wide jaws with big, sharp teeth that have the power to crush something as hard as bone. They have a magnificent, bright force that could exceed 1800 psi. These beautiful animals have a provocative nature, so a lion would not stand much of a chance in a fight with a fully grown hippo.
4. The Cape Buffalo

Also known as the African buffalo, stand proud on the horizon with males having a weight of up to 900kg (2 000 lbs). They combine their strengths as herd animals and protect each other fiercely, especially their young. The fact that they move in big herds should deter predators such as the lion, yet they still hunt the mighty buffalo at a great risk.
Individually, the buffalo pose with dangerous horns used to impale, and they could also set out to trample the lion with force. They have power and a great determination when they are faced with the predators that view them as prey. They are not seen as predators but they stand proud against any that challenge them.
5. The Nile Crocodile

Their big jaws are lined with sharp teeth that they use to catch prey or fight with other predators that pose a threat, such as the mighty lion. These animals are smart enough to make use of ambush tactics and utilize skill sets such as death rolling or drowning whatever they catch between their teeth.
The crocodile is comparable in weight to the lion, weighing up to 1000 kg (2,200 lbs), but a crocodile has the advantage of being able to swim better, and they are longer than the lion. They are easily the largest reptile in Africa. Their advantage lies in the water, where they can use stealth and their skin as armor against their adversaries.
6. The Spotted Hyena

These animals are seen as formidable challengers to the lion, not individually, but in packs, as they use this social cohesion for coordinated attacks. They wear their opponent down until it is exhausted from taking turns harassing and biting them. Hyenas are smart and relentless animals.
With sharp teeth in their powerful jaws, they deliver a deliberate bite that could be fatal. When it comes to the lion, they set out to do all of the above and eventually overwhelm the solitary lion. Packs of hyenas can number as high as 20. Hyenas, just like the lion, scavenge and hunt for their prey and would not shy away from hunting weak, small or injured lions, which are easy to isolate.
7. The Grizzly Bear

An encounter between a lion and a grizzly bear is more of a hypothetical one, as the grizzly bear is not an African native animal. The grizzly bear is much larger, heavier and more robust, which could result in them overwhelming and overpowering a lion. A grizzly is capable of killing large predators and prey with brute force, sharp claws and sharp teeth.
Their tactics include bearing down on their opponent, then standing grapple all the while using their big claws to issue big, powerful swipes that could cause great deep wounds. The weight of the grizzly gives away its size, with males being up to 680 kg (1 500lbs).
8. The Tiger

In a spectacular one-on-one conflict situation, a tiger would be a formidable challenger to the lion, with males weighing up to 320kg (700 lbs). Just like the lion, they are big cats with spectacular agility and strong muscle masses. Historically, tigers have been known to win in conflicts with lions. Tigers hunt solo as they are solitary animals.
They have overpowering strength and utilize stealth and agility to best their opponent or prey. With sharp teeth and big, sharp claws, they fight with the intent to cause great wounds and hurt their opponents. With the tiger often being bigger and heavier than a lion, the lion should think twice before engaging.
9. The Porcupine

A much smaller animal than the lion, but still worthy of being on the list, as they can still kill a lion. They are seen as prey to the lion, but porcupines would not go down without a fight. They have long, sharp barbed quills on their backs to protect themselves against threats in a more passive defense. These quills could easily end up on the body of a lion.
The face, eyes, paws, heart and even the throat of the lion are vulnerable to a quill or two piercing deep. Such wounds of quills lodged in the flesh of a lion could become infected and cause death.
In conclusion, the lion’s dominance and beauty are undeniable, but they are still vulnerable to dying in fierce conflicts with the adversaries mentioned above. This shows that even the king must be careful out there in the wild to survive.
