80 Out of 95 Tennessee Counties Struggling With Invasive Species

Facebook – CNN

One species has wholly taken over the U.S. and invaded more than 80% of their states. This invasion costs these states millions of dollars each year due to the destruction they cause when they rampage through agricultural lands and uproot entire ecosystems. The most notorious culprits? Wild hogs, whose numbers have exploded and whose impact is felt across multiple sectors.

What’s the Big Deal?

Wild hogs might be related to domestic pigs, but they are a different beast to deal with. Their aggressive nature, adaptability, and destructive habits make them challenging. Unlike their domesticated cousins, these feral swine are built to survive in the harshest conditions, threatening the delicate ecosystems around them.

How Did We Get Here?

These wild hogs have gotten out of control due to their introduction to hunting opportunities. With few natural predators and a rapid reproduction rate, these populations have spiraled out of control. What started as a misguided attempt to boost recreation became an ecological nightmare.

The Destruction of Farmlands

One of the most expensive impacts these hogs have on each state is their destruction of farmlands. These animals have a relentless urge to root through crops, destroy fences, and disrupt agricultural operations. The financial toll is staggering, with millions of dollars lost each year due to their destructive behavior. They are a farmer’s worst nightmare!

A Death Sentence for Native Wildlife

These hogs are indiscriminate eaters and will eat almost anything that crosses their path, from crops to small mammals. Their insatiable appetite can ruin entire food sources and habitats for all wildlife in the area. They create a hostile environment everywhere they go, forcing native wildlife to fight for their food in environments they usually didn’t have to.

The Reproduction Problem

The fact that these hogs have a high reproduction rate doesn’t help the invasive species. Each sow can produce up to two litters per year, containing between 4 and 12 piglets. Their population can grow faster than they are held under control, which makes this challenge even harder.

A Threat to Livestock and Humans

These hogs aren’t just destructive, but they pose quite a danger to humans and livestock in the area. Wild hogs carry around 30 diseases and numerous parasites that can quickly spread. These hogs move through farms and waterways, allowing time for them to transmit these diseases to humans and livestock in the area.

The Economic Burden on These States

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency estimates that wild hog damage costs the state over $26 million annually. This is the damage in just one state; imagine the financial burden across every other state; the loss is detrimental.

Water Contamination and Environmental Impact

Wild hogs’ habit of wallowing in water sources contaminates streams and ponds, particularly on farms. Their destructive behavior also causes long-term environmental damage, leading to soil erosion, habitat degradation, and further disruption of ecosystems. Even though these hogs have some use in the hunting industry, the damage they cause is so much worse.

Why Traditional Eradication Methods Fail

Hunting is usually the go-to way to get rid of high populations in areas where they are causing a problem. These wild hogs are a whole different breed in hunting as they are intelligent and adaptable. They quickly learn how to avoid hunters and fight for their survival. This makes eradication efforts pointless as they have a knack for survival.

The Only Way To Trap These Hogs

Wildlife experts suggest that large-scale trapping is the most effective way to reduce hog numbers. Coordinated efforts using corral traps have shown promise, but sustained and strategic implementation is crucial for making a lasting impact. This approach requires significant resources and collaboration between various stakeholders.
