HZDR carried out research in partnership with TUD Dresden University of Technology and Australian National University (ANU). But from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean is a finding that might offer a new means of connecting Earth’s geological history.
The Importance of the Isotope

This isotope is suspected to have come from supernova explosions millions of years ago. Beryllium-10 is a rare isotope produced when high-energy cosmic rays hit oxygen and nitrogen in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. It falls to the ocean with rain and accumulates in sediments, forming cosmic activity. This isotope has a life of 1.4 million years and is, therefore, a useful time-tracking tool for events up to 10 million years ago.
The Stranding Event

At the same time, more than 150 false killer whales were discovered beached on a remote coast near Arthur River in Tasmania, Australia. First observations showed that 136 of these sea mammals were initially still alive.
