Something strange is stirring beneath the ocean. Scientists have identified an ancient signal coming from the deep Pacific. At the same time, 150 whales inexplicably stranded themselves on the coast of Tasmania. Is this a coincidence, or could there be some unseen force shaping the world?
Discovery of the Ancient Signal
A surprising peak of a rare isotope was discovered on the Pacific Ocean’s seabed. HZDR carried out research in partnership with TUD Dresden University of Technology and Australian National University (ANU). A standard time scale for geologic events is still unavailable, and scientists continue to search for reliable methods to date ancient geological events. But from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean is a finding that might offer a new means of connecting Earth’s geological history.
The Importance of the Isotope
This isotope is suspected to have come from supernova explosions millions of years ago. Beryllium-10 is a rare isotope produced when high-energy cosmic rays hit oxygen and nitrogen in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. It falls to the ocean with rain and accumulates in sediments, forming cosmic activity. This isotope has a life of 1.4 million years and is, therefore, a useful time-tracking tool for events up to 10 million years ago.
The Stranding Event
At the same time, more than 150 false killer whales were discovered beached on a remote coast near Arthur River in Tasmania, Australia. First observations showed that 136 of these sea mammals were initially still alive.
Deep-Sea Signals and Whale Strandings
Mass whale strandings are not uncommon, but they are still poorly understood. The reasons range from environmental shifts, to navigational errors from ocean noise, magnetic anomalies or unknown underwater disturbances. But now scientists think that geological disturbances, such as the recently discovered deep-sea signal, might disorient marine life.
Euthanasia Decision
When the whales were found to be in poor condition, and officials realized that rescue wasn’t going to be possible, they had to make the hard call to euthanize the remaining stranded whales to avoid suffering.
Historical Context
This was the first mass stranding of false killer whales in Tasmania since 1974. The event is rare, which is why responding to it in such an isolated area was tricky.
