Dogs have domesticated by humans over thousands of years. This means that over time, dogs have become our best companions, but it also means that they can be highly dependent on us – some breeds more than others. Here are some dog breeds that need constant attention to be able to thrive.
American Pit Bull Terriers
American pit bull terriers are probably the most misunderstood breed of dog on the planet. They have a bad rap for being aggressive dogs, but they can actually be incredibly sweet and loving animals. They are easy to train and require human dedication to thrive and be the best animal they can be.
Border Collie
Border Collies are some of the most intelligent dog breeds out there, and they are incredibly social, too. If they feel they’ve disappointed you, they will take it to heart and try to make it up to you. With good reinforcement and training, they are wonderful animals, but they do need frequent attention.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a long line as royal dogs, which means they’ve gotten used to being a little pampered. They are great lap dogs that enjoy spending time with their owners. They can pick up on how their owner is feeling. They are very sensitive to stress but are always eager to please their owners and enjoy getting stuck into a routine.
Australian Shepherd
Australian shepherds share similar behavioral traits to border collies and are extremely protective when it comes to their owners. They love being the center of attention and if they feel they aren’t getting enough, will feel distressed. They enjoy having big families to protect where attention can be consistent.
Golden Retriever
Golden retrievers are often used as search and rescue and therapy dogs. This is for a good reason – they empathize exceptionally well with humans they are bonded with and enjoy comforting their owners when they are in distress. If left alone, they can suffer from separation anxiety.
Labrador Retriever
Labrador retrievers are among the most popular breeds in America. They are wonderful family dogs that are easy to train, but require a lot of attention from the families that raise them. When training, they require a lot of patience else they will think they are letting down their owners, leading to anxiety.
Doberman Pinscher
Doberman Pinschers are used in police work and other security careers. This is because they are incredibly protective animals, but they are also easily distressed if hurt by the ones they trust. They are good at communicating their problems to their owners and are always willing to learn more about them.
Dogue de Bordeaux
Dogue de Bordeaux, or French mastiffs, are enormous but loving dogs that form a deep connection with their owners. They depend on their owners and cannot be scalded too harshly, or they will take it personally. If they are given a lot of affection and care, they will give it all straight back, making them wonderful pets.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Staffordshire bull terriers, or “staffies,” are often mislabeled because they are terriers. Despite having a lineage in fighting, they are gentle dogs that are often nicknamed “nannies.” This is because they are surprisingly good with children and will protect and nurture them as they grow up.
Irish Wolfhound
Irish wolfhounds are enormous dogs which means despite their playful nature, it may not be a good idea to have them in households with small children. For families with older kids, they are affectionate and make amazing therapy animals. They get very close to their owners, being they are a very dependent breed.
Newfoundland
Newfoundlands are very tolerant dogs, especially around young children. They are very social animals that can be easily trained. Positive reinforcement is crucial for their development and will ensure that they trust their owner completely.
Havanese
Havanese is a toy breed with a big personality and a mild temperament. They are outgoing dogs that seek the approval of their owners in order to thrive. They are great therapy dogs and require frequent exercise, making bonding time especially important.
