1. The Devils Hole Pupfish

The Devils Hole pupfish is a critically endangered species that can only be found in Devils Hole in Nevada. This tiny fish grows up to 1.2 inches long and is highly specialized to its unique environment. The water in Devils Hole sits at a constant 91°F and has very low oxygen levels. This fish has adapted to the environment by by developing behaviors like “paradoxical anaerobism,” which allows it to survive without breathing oxygen for short periods.

2. The Giant Freshwater Stingray

The Giant Freshwater Stingray is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world and can be found in rivers and estuaries of Southeast Asia and Borneo. These giant fish can grow up to 7.2 feet wide and weigh over 660 pounds. It has been listed as Endangered by the IUCN due to overfishing and habitat degradation.

The Chinese Paddlefish was one of the largest freshwater fish and reached up to 23 feet. Unfortunately, it is now considered extinct. During the 1950s, it was primarily confined to the Yangtze River.
