When adopting a cat, most people gravitate to the same kinds of breeds, leaving a few breeds often forgotten about. For whatever reason, some breeds struggle to find forever homes as quickly as their popular counterparts. Just because they’re not as popular doesn’t mean they aren’t great pets to have around.
1. Singapura
This is one of the smallest domestic cat breeds, typically weighing between four and eight pounds. It has large, expressive eyes and a sleek, sepia-toned coat. Its high energy levels and constant need for attention can make it challenging for some pet owners to keep them around. They are also a rare breed bred by only a handful of breeders, so finding them in a shelter might be slightly harder.
2. Japanese Bobtail
These stunning cats can be recognized by their pom-pom-like tail, which has been seen as a symbol of good luck by the Japanese for centuries. They are a rare breed that might be hard to find in the US, making adoption almost impossible in some cases. They are a very energetic breed, often displaying dog-like behaviors like fetching toys and following their owners around the house.
3. Turkish Van
Most cats aren’t known to like water at all, but this curious breed is fascinated with swimming, earning it the nickname “the swimming cat.” This breed might not be the best pet for owners needing a low-maintenance feline, as it is highly intelligent and active. While affectionate on its terms, it is not typically a lap cat and prefers interactive play over cuddling.
4. Selkirk Rex
These feline friends have a unique curly coat, a sturdy build, and a laid-back, easygoing temperament. Due to their rarity in the US, they are one of the lesser adopted cat breeds, and people have a misconception that their coats are high-maintenance. Their curls are relatively low-maintenance, needing only occasional brushing to prevent matting.
5. Egyptian Mau
This stunning breed has a sleek, spotted coat, expressive green eyes, and incredible agility. It is one of the fastest domestic cat breeds and can reach speeds of up to 30 mph. While they are deeply loyal and affectionate with their families, Egyptian Maus can be reserved around strangers, making them less immediately approachable in a shelter setting. They are quite scarce in the US, making it unlikely that you’ll be able to find them in a local shelter.
6. Korat
These beautiful cats are rarely found outside the US as they mainly originate from Thailand. Korats are highly intelligent and form deep bonds with their owners. They are strong-willed and can sometimes even be possessive, but that doesn’t make them any less loved by their owners.
7. LaPerm
These cats can be quite rare to come across as they are mainly only bred by a small group of breeders making it unlikely for them to end up in a shelter. They have soft, wavy fur that can range from loose curls to tight ringlets, giving them a distinctive and charming appearance. They are a very friendly, people-orientated breed that loves interacting with the people around them.
8. Khao Manee
This stunning breed is known for its mesmerizing eyes and white coat. It is primarily found in Thailand but can often be found in the US through a few breeders. This breed is highly sociable, playful, and affectionate, making it the perfect addition to any family.
9. Oriental Shorthair
Its sleek, slender body and large, almond-shaped eyes might even resemble a Siamese. These felines are active and vocal, making them the perfect addition to a family with an active lifestyle. While not as rare as some other breeds mentioned, they might be harder to find than a typical breed in the US.
10. Kurilian Bobtail
These cats are very smart, curious, and playful, and they form strong bonds with their families. They are also known for their love of water, which makes them stand out from many other breeds.
11. Toyger
While they might look intimidating, these playful felines are pretty friendly and social. This breed closely resembles a tiger, but their playful nature makes them ideal for any family environment. It’s a common misconception that they are high maintenance, but they can easily adapt to any household.
12. Havana Brown
These cats have a rich brown coat and green eyes, making them a beautiful breed that can be pretty mesmerizing. They are intelligent and curious and enjoy being involved in family activities, making them great companions for families who can give them the care they need.
