Dogs have existed for thousands of years, and over the years, they started changing before our eyes without even noticing it. As we selectively breed dogs for specific traits, some breeds are evolving in ways we can witness in real time.
1. Pug
Pugs are well known for their “squished” faces, but this cute feature has caused them many health problems, especially respiratory problems. Pugs are now being bred with more emphasis on health, and they are working on breeding Pugs with slightly longer noses and clearer airways, making them more capable of handling the hot and humid environments they often find themselves in.
2. Scottish Terrier
These dogs were once bred for hunting small game, but now they are bred for an urban lifestyle. Their natural hunting instincts are being tempered, and many Scottish Terriers today are more inclined toward companionship than hunting. They have also had a less rugged look than they used to have and are becoming less independent and seeking more attention from their owners.
3. Poodle
Poodles were once bred to be hunting and retrieval dogs, but they quickly became top contenders for dog sports and activities. Poodles are usually family pets, and their hypoallergenic, curly coat has made them a favorite among allergy sufferers. These dogs have become even more loyal than they used to be and make great companions.
4. Bobtail
They were once bred for herding and guarding livestock, but they have become more loved as suburban house pets in recent years. This change has influenced their temperament, with modern Bobtails often showing less intensity in herding instincts and a greater focus on socializing and bonding with their families.
5. Bloodhound
These dogs are well-known for their sharp noses. They were once used in tracking and search-and-rescue missions. Over the years, this role has become more specialized, and now they are mostly found in homes with loving families.
6. English Bull Terrier
In the 19th century, they were bred for bull-baiting and later as fierce competitors in dog fighting rings. As soon as they moved away from their violent history, they became playful, lovable pets. These little dogs have become quite the family breed and have lost most of their aggressive traits.
7. Bernese Mountain Dog
These once-hardworking farm dogs were used for herding cattle, pulling carts, and guarding property. But that quickly changed when they became urban house pets with a loving family. While less active than their ancestors, they are content with long walks and playing around with their family.
8. Boxer
These pups were once bred for hunting and as guard dogs. The Boxer’s energetic and protective nature made it an excellent working dog. These dogs are well known for their energy levels and love of children. They are pretty playful pups, which makes them perfect for active families.
9. Doberman Pinscher
Known for their strong, intimidating features, they have always made for excellent guard dogs. They were once bred for police work, military service, and personal protection. While they still have protective traits, they are playful and loyal, making them perfect for families with children.
10. German Shepherd
This once-herding dog turned hero dog is so much more than their stereotype. These dogs have shifted more toward being loyal, loving pets. While they still have keen intelligence and strong protective instincts that make them exceptional working dogs, they thrive in a family environment and have become loving, loyal pets.
11. Yorkshire Terrier
Who would have thought that these luxurious lap dogs were once used to catch small critters? While they might still be feisty from time to time, they have grown quite comfortable in their spoiled era amongst loving families.
12. Rottweiler
This fearless breed has evolved into a loving family pet with its gentle and loyal traits. They were once hardworking dogs used to herd cattle, pull carts, and guard livestock. While they still have their protective nature, with the right training, these dogs can be quite the companion.
