1. Shire

If there is a breed that personifies the words “gentle giant,” it’s the Shire. These horses, originating from England, reach heights of 19 hands and weigh over 2,000 pounds! Originally employed to haul heavy wagons, their feathered legs and soft and their gentle eyes render them unforgettable. Despite their huge size, they’re very gentle and affectionate.
2. Clydesdale

The Clydesdale is perhaps one of the most iconic horse breeds. At approximately 16-18 hands high, the Scottish horse is heavily built with a regal stature. Historically, it was primarily used for heavy hauling and agriculture in Lanarkshire and Glasgow. While they might be best known for their roles in Budweiser advertisements, Clydesdales are also loved for their gentle, affectionate disposition and strong work ethic.
3. Percheron

Originating from France, Percherons are both strong and refined. They range from 15 to 19 hands in height. Percherons were originally bred as war horses and later as needed farm and carriage horses. Unlike most draft horses, Percherons are friendly, willing, and spirited, which is why they are widely used in riding and driving lessons globally.
4. Belgian Draft

Strong and dependable, the Belgian Draft is among the largest horse breeds in the world. Typically measuring 16-18 hands high and weighing more than a ton, these horses are a mainstay of farming and logging. Unbeknownst to their stature and weight, however, they’re among the kindest and most gentle horses around, and favorites among those of us who work with them.
5. Suffolk Punch

A beautiful and unique breed, the Suffolk Punch is characterized by its gorgeous chestnut color. Bred to work on farms, the English draft horse has a strong, muscular physique. Unlike most other heavy horses, Suffolk Punches are friendly and willing in temperament, and they are a great addition to farm life.
6. Friesian

Friesians are the epitome of grace. Jet black fur, flowing manes, and elevated action make them look as though they came directly off the pages of a romance novel. Originating in the Netherlands, these horses were warhorses but now do dressage, films, and even therapy. Not only are they aesthetically perfect, they’re also affectionate and easy to train.
7. American Cream Draft

The only draft horse breed from the U.S., the American Cream Draft, is recognized by its golden coat and amber eyes. On average, 15 to 16.3 hands high, the American Cream Draft was developed as a farm laborer but now is valued for being quiet, friendly people pleasers. Though rare, their looks and disposition make them a unique breed.
8. Irish Draught

The Irish Draught is an all-rounder in every sense. Originally bred for farm work in Ireland, they are 15 to 17 hands and have great strength and athleticism. Today, they are being cross-bred with Thoroughbreds to produce top sport horses for show jumping and eventing. Even though they are very talented, they are calm, reliable, and laid back.
9. Gypsy Vanner

The Gypsy Vanner is a fairy tale horse. The Romani bred them to drive caravans, and they are small but strong horses that stand between 13 and 16 hands. With their long, flowing manes and feathered legs, they are just beautiful. But all the magic they hold lies in their kind and loving hearts, and they become treasured companions.
10. Andalusian

The Andalusian, or Pure Spanish Horse, is a breed famous for its beauty and agility. Thousands of years old, these horses were prized by both nobles and warriors. Andalusians stand between 15 and 16.2 hands high, with a strength equalled by a gentle disposition, being particularly suited to dressage and classical riding. Intelligent, loyal, and having a regal presence, the Andalusian leaves a lasting impression.
Each of these horses is the ideal combination of strength and kindness. They may be large, but their hearts are pure gold. Which of these gentle giants draws you in the most?
