Many people think that choosing a dog is the same as ordering an item off of a menu. But you can’t simply browse the options and impulsively pick whatever looks the most appealing at the time. Sadly, some people learn the hard way that certain breeds are stubborn, high-maintenance, and require expert-level handling. If you’re a first-time dog owner, do yourself a favor and steer clear of these particular breeds for now.
1. Border Collie
Border Collies are doggy geniuses, which sounds great until you realize they outsmart you daily. If they’re not mentally and physically challenged, they’ll tear up your furniture, escape like Houdini, and herd everything—including your children.
2. Siberian Husky
Huskies are gorgeous and full of personality, but they’re also howling, digging, running-away-at-every-opportunity type of menaces. They have endless energy, require constant exercise, and might shred your couch to the bone, when bored.
3. Akita
Akitas are loyal and powerful, but also strong-willed, independent, and difficult to train. They don’t tolerate foolishness (from other dogs or people) and require an experienced leader who knows how to handle their dominant nature.
4. Dalmatian
Dalmatians look like Disney stars, but they’re actually high-energy, headstrong, and prone to behavioral issues if not trained properly. They were bred for running alongside horses, so if you’re not ready for a hyperactive, stubborn athlete, move along.
5. Belgian Malinois
These dogs are police and military favorites for a reason—they’re intense working dogs, NOT couch pets. Malinois require hours of training and exercise every single day. Without it? They’ll wreck your house and take over your life.
6. Chihuahua
Chihuahuas may be tiny, but they’re also aggressive, territorial, and don’t trust strangers. If not trained properly, they become yappy, possessive, and think they own the place. Spoil them, and you’ll create a tiny terror. You’ve been warned.
7. Rottweiler
Rottweilers are loyal and loving but also strong, territorial, and need proper socialization. Without consistent leadership, they can become overprotective, dominant, and a serious challenge to control.
8. Jack Russell Terrier
Jack Russells are small but have the energy of a caffeinated squirrel. These dogs were bred to chase and hunt, meaning they need constant stimulation, training, and an owner who can keep up with their chaos.
9. Cane Corso
Cane Corsos are massive, powerful, and fiercely protective. Without proper training and structure, they become unruly, aggressive, and impossible to manage. This is not a dog for someone who thinks watching YouTube training videos is enough.
10. Afghan Hound
Afghan Hounds are stunning, but don’t expect them to care about your commands. They’re independent, aloof, and prefer doing their own thing. Training an Afghan? More like negotiating with a cat.
Maybe Stick to the Easier Breeds, Rookie
Dogs are amazing, but some breeds are just too much for beginners. If you’re a first-time owner, start with a breed that actually listens and won’t destroy your house. Save these high-maintenance dogs for when you’re ready for the challenge.
