Dogs can be the best companions that can play an important role in improving the quality of life that their owner has. However, some breeds can be prone to “single-child syndrome” and don’t tend to like having to share their household with other pets. Here are some breeds that should usually be the only pet in the house. Remember that there are always exceptions and it also depends on the individual animal.
Cairn Terrier

The Cairn terrier can be an amazing companion in a big house or even in a small apartment. Their one drawback is that they tend to thrive the most when they are the only pets in the house. They are active and require a lot of one-on-one attention to training and physical stimulation.
Shar-Pei

Shar-Peis are beautiful dogs known for their unique and wrinkled appearance. They like being the sole pet due to their cat-like independence and territorial character. They will enjoy their time the most if they don’t have to share their space with other animals.
Chow Chow

Chow Chows can be quite independent dogs that are sometimes more aloof than anything else. They have a dominant character that means they sometimes don’t tend to play nice with other animals and won’t have a high tolerance for them. They like to only share their living space with their human family.
Akita

Akitas are fiercely loyal dogs that can, at times, be overprotective of their owners. This, coupled with a strong territorial nature and prey drive, means that it is sometimes best for them not to have to share their space where they would have to coexist with other animals.
Rottweiler

The Rottweiler has a long history in both herding and protective careers, such as security and police work. They are defensive and territorial dogs that make an amazing bond with their human owners but tend to feel isolated when it comes to other pets.
Basenji

The Basenji is a unique barkless dog that has an exceptional prey drive, which means they may not do well with small pets occupying their territory. They do the best when they are surrounded by their owners and are the sole attention of love and affection.
Pharaoh Hound

The Pharaoh hound is a very active dog that needs a lot of attention and dedication to train and keep physically stimulated. They also have a strong prey drive which means they love to chase small animals they may mistake for prey.
Jack Russel Terrier

Jack Russel terriers may be small dogs, but being terriers, their prey drive is strong, which means they have a tendency to chase animals smaller than their own size. These hunting instincts mean that they are better suited to being the sole pet in the household.
Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is an independent dog that can be quite territorial. They value and will protect their own space and may not enjoy having to share it with other pets. They also have a strong prey drive, making other small pets a risk to own.
Belgian Malinois

The Belgian Malinois is a dominant and boisterous breed that loves working for attention and having a job to do. Their boisterous nature, coupled with their protective instincts, means that they like being the sole protector and point of attention in the household. They must also be socialized at a young age, or the chance of them getting along with other animals plummets.
