“Man’s best friend” isn’t always, man’s best friend… Even the most loyal breeds can turn against their master. Poor training, bad breeding, or simply their nature causes some dogs to behave unpredictability. Here are 10 breeds that have a reputation for turning on their owners.
1. Siberian Husky

Huskies are independent, intelligent, and full of energy. But these character traits can sometimes make them unpredictable. If they don’t get enough exercise or stimulation, they can act out or even become aggressive. Their strong hunting instinct can also be problematic in homes with small pets.
2. Rottweiler

Rottweilers are great dogs, bred for protection. When they are raised appropriately, they are loving and obedient. But a lack of socialization, bad breeding or abuse can make them dangerous. A poorly trained Rottweiler might see strangers, or even family members, as a threat, and react aggressively.
3. German Shepherd

German Shepherds are used in the police force and military for a reason. They’re highly intelligent, have strong protective instincts and are trainable. But if not trained or socialized properly, their instincts can get the better of them. Some German Sheperds turn on their owners when they feel afraid or challenged.
4. Doberman Pinscher

Dobermans are natural guard dogs, so they are wary of strangers. They can be particularly loyal, but inadequate training can cause them to be aggressive. If they feel threatened, they could react negatively. If a Doberman doesn’t have a strong leader, it can become dominant and unpredictable.
5. Alaskan Malamute

Malamutes resemble Huskies but are larger and have fluffier coats. They’re strong-willed and don’t always eagerly follow orders. If they sense fear or weakness in their owner, they believe they are dominant. Without adequate training, they can become hard to handle and, in some instances, aggressive.
6. Chow Chow

Chow Chows look like cute teddy bears, but they are actually one of the most unpredictable breeds. They can be aloof, territorial and stubborn. They have been known to bite their owners if not trained or socialized properly. They also don’t respond to teasing or rough handling, making them potentially dangerous around children.
7. Pit Bull Terrier

There are two main opposing beliefs about Pit Bulls. Some people are convinced they’re gentle and loving. Others believe they can be very unpredictable in nature. If a Pit Bull is well-trained, it is typically safe, but mistreatment and bad breeding can make it lash out. Plus, because of their strength, when they do attack, it can be lethal.
8. Cane Corso

This ancient Italian breed was once a hunting and guard dog. They are protective by nature and require an experienced, strong owner. Without clear leadership and assertiveness, they can see themselves as the boss. If they feel confronted or threatened, they won’t hesitate to use their powerful bite.
9. Dalmatian

Dalmatians might look playful and remind you of the Disney 101 Dalmatians, but they can be aggressive and highly-strung. Historically, they were bred as carriage guards so they have high protective instincts. If they feel overwhelmed, they can become snappy or attack.
10. Akita

Akitas are big, strong dogs with a sense of loyalty. But they are also very stubborn animals. They don’t always trust strangers and can react aggressively if they sense danger. If they don’t respect their owner as a the alpha or leader, they may confront them.
Why Do Some Dogs Turn On Their Owners?

Most dogs don’t attack out of nowhere. Neglect, abuse, bad breeding, and improper training can lead to aggression. Some breeds just have stronger guarding or hunting instincts. But with the right owner and care, even so-called “dangerous” dogs can be devoted comrades.
Beyond the Breed

Every dog is unique, and no breed can just be labeled as bad. But some are more prone to aggression than others. The key is being a responsible owner. This means investing in the right breed-specific training, and making sure the dog in question undergoes proper socialization. A dog’s conduct is usually a reflection of its environment and circumstances.
